XBl doesn't have a $1.5 option, it's either $8 a month of $50 a year and either way you're wasting cash. No one plays 12 months out of the year and barely anyone plays less than 6 months. So either choice you waste cash unless you play online every day or play for less than 6 months or just play the PS3 for online instead.

Uncharted2>Gears but I'm not sure if you'd consider that a comparison though they're both third person shooters with an emphasis on cover systems. Crackdown isn't even that good, infamous is better.Forza looks pretty damn good for a racing game, hopefully Gran Turismo5 pulls through. Mass effect, hmm dunno. ill answer your question since i know what youre talking about.
yes, you need an external HDD only if you want to back up your files on your ps3.
the external HDD needs to be formatted to FAT32 because thats the only way the ps3 will be able to recognize it.
you can check online on how to format your HDD to FAT32 if youre interested.
if you dont need to back up any saved files on your ps3, then you can skip all the steps regarding the external HDD. =]
